chaos and beauty intertwined
a tornado of roses from divine
A soft sigh escaped her mouth once she had attempted to rub the sleep out of her eyes. Whenever the days were longer and darker in the last month of the year, she felt how her energy levels were significantly lower than they were during the summer. She supposed it had something to do with the cold and the darkness. On the other hand, this month was rather cosy too, and although she wouldn’t quickly admit that, she liked that. With her free hand, she tucked a strand of hair back behind her ear.

Her fingers trailed over the books that were put up on the countless shelves of the library. Even though she liked partying more than studying, she could be found in the library quite often. She studied literature, after all. Today, she was planning on finding a few books that could come to use for her next paper, and she was mostly focussing on the classics right now. Margot narrowed her eyes when she noticed a open spot on the top shelf, right where Robinson Crusoe was supposed to be. ”Shit,” she muttered, standing up on her toes and letting her fingers explore the dusty shelf, trying to get hold of the book that had been pushed to the back. To catch a breath – and to think of a more efficient way to get the book – she lowered her arm again. By the time she looked aside, she noticed a familiar face. ”What are you doing here?” she blunty asked him. To be honest, Max was the last person she had expected to roam around in a library.

THIS IS OUR DECISION
TO LIVE FAST AND DIE YOUNG
Somehow, Arianna had gotten him into the habit of going to the library in order to study. While it was by no means fun, making it into somewhat of a routine had helped him get his grades up at least a little bit. He had passed two courses already, which was probably a good sign. Every so often, a mate of his accompanied him to the library and they’d spend the day studying together. That way, it wasn’t so bad most of the time. They could take breaks and grab coffee together, which gave him something to look forward to.

Today, however, he was all alone. This afternoon, he’d had half a mind to not go and spend his day in his room instead, watching Netflix or taking a nap. But he still had a paper to finish, so he had decided to hit the library instead. And this time, he did not forget to bring his laptop with him. So, there he was, seated at one of the many desks, leaning forward as his eyes were fixated on the illuminated screen. His research paper was taking shape already and, to be quite honest, he was actually kind of proud of it. He was so focused that he didn’t even notice the person close to him until she directly addressed him. He raised a brow at her. “What’s it look like? I’m working on something,” he whispered, nodding at the screen which showcased a Word document containing his paper. “Got a deadline soon.” Usually, he didn’t care much about those, but this time he was so close he kinda wanted to be on time.

Margot wondered how long she would keep this up before she would end up in a bar with her friends. Surely, she had quite a few books to go before she could write her literature analysis, but she had always had a tough time resisting temptation. And whenever her friends were heading out – while she was staring at piles of postponed work – she tended to make the choice that would satisfy her needs in the short term.

Her deadline started to close in on her, and realisation had hit her that she would truly have to read those books now. The first step had been to come collect them, and even though she came here pretty often, the real challange was to open those books up once she was back in her room. While she was trying to get her hands on the right books, she got distracted by the presence of a familiar face. He was working on something. Those words sounded extremely strange coming from his mouth, and she raised her brow too when he added that he had a deadline soon. ”From what I remember, you care very little about those.” She hadn’t spoken to him in quite some time now, and she figured what had caused this sudden change. ”Did you hit your head recently?” she curiously asked him, peeking over at the screen of his laptop.

Margot was right, of course. It was very unlike him to be here in the first place. Max was fairly sure that the times he had been to the library could be counted on a single hand, until recently. It was very clear to him what had brought on this change, even if he didn’t really want to admit it to himself. He wished he could have given a nobler reason, for example that he had regained his motivation on his own, or that he had stumbled onto a newfound passion for his field of study. But none of that was really true.

It didn’t matter much, though. As long as he was here whenever he needed to be. And today, he was working rather diligently. His in-depth analysis was really taking shape, and he was quite glad with all the work he had put in. He’d already submitted his first draft, but he was sure that there wouldn’t be too much feedback waiting for him once it got back. Margot still wasn’t over the initial shock of seeing him here of all places, though. And she had to be a dick about it, too. “No, I just…” he started. ‘I was just trying to impress a girl’ didn’t exactly sound right, though. “I don’t wanna get kicked out of university, alright?” Before picking up history, he’d studied two other courses. Sooner rather than later, they would be done with his slacking.

There were days where she greatly regretted picking literature to study, especially when she gazed at the list of books she would have to read in the next month. If she wanted to succeed, she had to keep herself to a strict schedule. And not only did she have to read those books, but she also had to prepare her homework and write analyses’ about them. Not to mention that reading books wasn’t the only thing you had to do when studying a language.

Motivating herself with something nice ahead of her might work out for her today. While she was picking out the right books, her attention was drawn to a familiar face sitting behind a library desk, seeming to be working quite hard on something. ”Alright, I get that,” she eventually said in response, although she wasn’t sure if she indeed got it. In the past, he had cared very little about getting kicked out. ”What are you working on?” she asked him, holding onto the two books she had already gathered as she walked over to his desk.

Max couldn’t say that his topic of study was getting more interesting the further he delved into it. Perhaps it was a sign that he still hadn’t picked the right course, even if he was on his third already. Or perhaps you simply weren’t meant to enjoy studying at all. Now that he thought about it, most of his peers only complained about the coursework, only occasionally mentioning that it was ‘kinda interesting’ sporadically. He supposed that nothing was too interesting anymore once you had to spend hours writing a paper about it.

But he received an unwanted break in the form of Margot questioning about his curious behaviour, which was actually quite commonplace for your average student. She accepted his excuse. He wasn’t all that scared of getting kicked out of the university at all. If they threatened to do so, he was sure his father would make a generous donation in order to keep him here anyway. “Research paper,” he answered, letting her peek over his shoulder at the screen. “It’s about urbanization in the late middle ages.” He was fairly sure it wouldn’t be too interesting to anybody. “You?” he then asked, nodding at the books she was holding. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d seen anyone come into the library to loan an actual book.

When she saw her ex sitting behind a screen in the library, actually working on something, it had piqued her curiosity enough to start a conversation with him. She wasn’t sure how long it would last, as she wasn’t planning on staying in the library for too long. Besides, perhaps they would be shushed by other hard-working students that wouldn’t appreciate them disturbing the peace.

He was working on a research paper about urbanization in the late middle ages. God, that didn’t sound like much fun. ”That sounds… pretty boring,” she eventually admitted. Some people would give the socially acceptable answer, but Margot couldn’t be bothered. Margot looked down at her books when he bounced back the question. ”I need to read a couple of books before I can start with my assignment,” she stated, reaching in to take the first book from her pile and briefly holding it up, as if she was proving that she was actually taking a few books with her. ”Reads better than on my laptop.” Her eyes would start to hurt after staring down her screen after some hours, so she prefered the paper ones.

Talking to others in the library was a little bit of an asshole thing to do, so he made sure to keep his voice down as well as he could. Not that it was enough, since a few people still looked at him as if he had just pissed into their cereal or something. It made him lose all sympathy for them at ones, which then gave him the impulse to only start talking louder. He didn’t, though. He didn’t want to get kicked out of the library when he was so damn close to actually finishing a paper for once.

Margot commented that it sounded quite boring, to which he nodded. “It does, doesn’t it?” Truth be told, he found it quite interesting, now that he was delving into it properly. But he wasn’t going to tell her that, lest she think he was boring. She told him she needed to read a couple of books before starting on an assignment, which she preferred to do manually rather than electronically. Made sense, he supposed. “What kind of books?” he decided to ask, curiously peeking at the cover. She was following a pretty interesting course, if he said so himself, so every so often he did get curious about what she was reading.
