Extracurricular Activities

At Queen's College London, there are several extracurricular activities students can partake in, ranging from study associations and student societies to sports clubs.

Study associations

A study association is operated by students who follow the same undergraduate course. Its purpose is to give students the opportunity to socialize with their peers, as well as organize and participate in activities that are related to their field of study. For example, a study association may give its members a discount on course literature, or host extracurricular lectures, theme parties, and (inter)national trips. Study societies are only open to students who are in that particular field of study (i.e. a law student cannot join the study association for medicine).

Specific study associations will be added later on, based on which courses will become most active.

Student societies

A student society is operated by students at a university, whose membership typically consists of students and alumni. Its purpose is to give students the opportunity to develop themselves in all fields of life. Student societies are generally open to all students. At QCL, there are two student societies.

OLYMPIA

Characterized as elitist and exclusionist, organized for the benefit of a largely upper-class membership, this society is not for the faint-hearted. You’re expected to have a high level of commitment, so maintaining social groups outside of this close-knit community is hard, but is also why bonds made here are so strong. The membership fee for this association is also very high in comparison to the other association. The society is the overacting organization of its fraternities and sororities.

    GAIA

This student society was created as an opposing force to the traditional societies during the seventies, when liberation and innovation were at its peak. It moved away from the strict rules and gender roles and tried to diffuse most society systems. Diversity is key and everyone is welcome. Nowadays there are no fraternities or sororities but several clubs that explore different interests one might have, regardless of gender.
