NOTHING HURTS ANYMORE
I FEEL KINDA FREE
It took her less than a second to identify the exact song that started playing throughout the club right now. She managed to only just repress the most high-pitched shriek ever as she threw her hands up in sheer, unadulterated enthusiasm. The lights started flashing violently, dousing her and her friends in neon colours. From purple to green to bright, lovely pink. She couldn’t remember the last time she had felt this alive. Amelia sang – or rather, screamed - along at the top of her lungs, letting her body move to the beat without inhibition.

She danced for what felt like hours on end, until one of her friends attenuated her to the fact that she probably needed to drink something at some point. She was drenched in her own sweat, but nowhere near ready to go back home yet. She dragged a hand through her now-messy hair as one of her friends pulled her over to the bar. “An apple cider, please!” she asked the bartender, raising her voice as much as she could to be audible despite the loud music. But while she waited, another one of her favourite songs started playing, leaving her more than a little impatient for the drink that seemed to be taking ages to fix.

The original plan had been The Libertine. Nevertheless, he currently stood on the dancefloor of club 369.  The place was a bit too shabby to his taste. The music that they were playing here was deafening. No doubt that he would have to deal with a beep tomorrow. Also, he had noticed that the drinks here were just ice cubes with a hint of whatever cheap liquor they could find. His LITT, which was supposed to get him drunk, tasted more like a glass of water. Yet he stood here in front of the bar about to other another one. After repeating his order at least three times, he managed to instruct the bartender to get him two new ones as he liked to be double-parked. At the left of him, he noticed how a cute-looking girl also ordered herself a liquid refreshment. ”I’ll get you that one,” he said to her, throwing her a quick smile. From one of his pockets, he took some money and put it on top of the bar. ”Either spending it now or lose it somewhere tonight.” Oliver rarely made it through the night with money still in his pockets.

How hard was it to pull an Apple Bandit out of the fridge and open it, really? She supposed it wasn’t as much the complexity of the task that was holding her up. The bar was overcrowded, extremely so, to the point that she was making physical contact with at least two people by just standing there and waiting. For a second, she wasn’t sure whether the bartender had even heard her properly. Her voice wasn’t exceptionally loud, so maybe they had misunderstood her and she would now get an apple martini or something. Impatiently, she waited for her drink.

Finally, the single bottle was given to her. With a quick thanks, she reached over to her back pocket to grab her phone in order to pay, but someone beat her to it. She raised a surprised brow when a stranger threw some money onto the counter to pay for her drink. His argument was that he would lose it anyway if he didn’t spend it now. “So you’re one of those people who still carry cash around, huh?” she said in an amused tone. Am couldn’t remember the last time she’d had any change in her pocket. “But thanks anyway!” Her eyes were then pulled towards his drinks, multiple. From the look of it, it could be a long island, or just a regular coke. Then again, there was no reason to get two of the latter at the same time. “You know the rule about holding two drinks at once, right?” she then playfully said. The rule was that you couldn’t; you had to finish one of them immediately.

The girl next to him seemed a bit surprised that he was still carrying cash money with him. These days, most people paid everything by card or even with their phone. Oliver, however, had the habit of using coins and banknotes on a night out, because if he didn’t, he would easily spend all the money available on his bank account. ”I’m old-fashioned,” he eventually replied to her.  The girl also commented on the fact that he had ordered two drinks, reminding him of a certain rule about holding two drinks. Oliver chuckled as he looked away for a second.  ”Are you just making that up?” he asked her. ”Perhaps I’m just being generous and ordering an extra one for a friend.” Oliver was aware of the many rules there were around drinking. However, he had never heard of this one. Perhaps she was a bit confused with ‘Buffalo’, but that only applied to drinking with your dominant hand.

That little bit of cash was probably better spent on something else. She could easily afford her own drinks. Not that she minded receiving one for free, though. She wasn’t going to decline such a kindness, even if those gestures often came with some kind of expectation. She wondered whether he was just being nice, or whether he wanted something from her now. He told her he was old-fashioned like that. She chuckled. “Don’t tell me you don’t even have a smartphone and all of that,” she said, shaking her head. She was sure he wasn’t that old-fashioned.

She pointed out that there was a rule to him holding two drinks at once. He argued that, maybe, he was getting one for a friend, which could also easily be true. Amelia chuckled. “Aren’t all rules made up?” she pointed out. “I just want to see you chug a long island. Isn’t that enough?” She’d heard the drinks here were pretty watered down usually, so it couldn’t be that difficult for him, could it?

The strategy of only bringing a certain amount of cash on a night out had probably saved him many pounds and therefore had proven to be successful. Not that Oliver had ever faced any financial issues. Fortunately, his parents were always rather lavish when it came to depositing money on his bank account. ”I happen to have one of those,” he said when she asked him about having a smartphone. He took his phone out of his pocket and showed it to her briefly. ”Bought it to call my mom,” he lied, putting it back. In fact, he barely called his mom.

After she had pointed out that all rules were made up, she told him that she wanted to see him chuck the whole glass. Of course, that was what she wanted to see. Oliver hesitated for a moment. He wasn’t very fond of the idea of downing it right away. But he also didn’t want to give her the impression that he was a wimp.  ”Sure,” he said eventually as he grabbed one of the two glasses. ”Will you join me?” he asked, pointing to the other glass.

There was old-fashioned as in the kind of guys who still liked to pay for dinner on dates and hold open doors for women, and then there was the strange kind of old-fashioned that refused to own any sort of technology or to participate in the modern age in any way, shape, or form. She assumed he was the former, and the response he gave kind of confirmed it. In fact, she found his answer most endearing. “Aw,” she mused. “Is that true? I love that.” It was always a good sign when a guy had a good relationship with his mother, right? Unless it was too good, of course…

Usually when men were confronted with a challenge they accepted it almost right away, lest their fragile egos were damaged. Amelia gave him a brief smirk as she told him she’d like to see him chug the entirety of the glass. However, he asked her to join in, which wasn’t exactly how she had planned it. But she needed to be a good sport, right? She sighed. “Preferably not, but I guess I’ll have to,” she said, reaching out and taking the glass from him. This wasn’t going to end well, she knew, but at the same time she didn’t really care. “Here goes nothing,” she muttered, more so to herself than to him. “Cheers!” After clinking her glass against his, she did her very best to empty it all in one go. Amelia was by no means fast, nor was the drink as watery as she had hoped for, but eventually she managed to drink it all.

His mom always complained about him never reaching out to her. If she was lucky, he called her on important days such as her birthday or if he needed something from her. However, it was mostly her trying to get in touch with her oldest son to check on him. Every now and then, when she could not reach him by phone, his lovely mother had the habit of showing up at his house unannounced and always at the worst time.

The girl had challenged him to chuck LITT that he had just ordered. Oliver accepted it, however, proposed that she should join. He was curious as to whether a girl her size was able to down a whole cocktail at once. Fortunately, she was willing to join him and took the other glass. ”Cheers,” he said with a smirk on his face. After the two clinked their glasses, Oliver effortlessly downed his drink as if he was just drinking water. When he finished, he whipped off some drops from his chin with the back of his hands and watched how the girl tried to work her way through. ”Nice,” he said when she was done. ”So where did you learn how to do that?” he asked, hoping to make some kind of conversation.

Amelia had to admit that the boy in front of her was quite charming, and easy on the eyes as well. Usually, it was the less attractive and drunker guys who tended to came onto her in places such as these. And while she appreciated the free drinks it earned her, she hardly ever felt the need to actually spend any time with them, let alone take them home. Right now, however, she was willing to see how things would progress along the course of the next hour or so.

She was a little bummed out that he would return the challenge to her, knowing that chugging that drink would get her well on her way to actually being drunk. Fortunately for her, she was nowhere near the danger zone where she was going to puke just yet. It took her way longer to empty the entire glass than it took him, and Amelia had to admit that she had briefly paused somewhere along the way. By the time she was done, she almost felt a little teary-eyed and let out a soft groan. “That was not good,” she muttered. He then asked her where she’d learnt that. “My friends force me to chug a drink every so often,” she said, shaking her head in disapproval. “Usually it’s beer, though, not this.” Admittedly, the taste was better, but the effects were also far more severe. “I can’t believe how easily you knocked it back.” Now, she felt rather stupid for challenging him in the first place.

Before he had started studying at UCL, he had already struggled chugging simple beverages such as a beer. Nowadays, he downed strong alcoholic mix almost just as easy as a glass of water. Especially downing almost a litre of Smirnov Ice within mere seconds had become a quality.  However, he was not sure whether he should be proud of it, but it felt good to show others that he was capable of doing such things.

It appeared that the girl had learned the trick because her friends had forced her to chug drinks. But she admitted that it had been mostly beer, not cocktails. ”Practice makes perfect,” Oliver said when the girl expressed she was surprised at how fast he did it. ”It’s one of my many qualities,” he smirked. ”Are you a student? he asked, seating himself on one of the barstools. Judging from her chugging skills, he expected her answer to be yes.

Amelia didn’t think she would ever be the kind of person who could chug a full glass of any alcoholic beverage without getting teary-eyed and feeling as if she was going to throw up. It wasn’t even the alcoholic contents of the drink that annoyed her so, but rather the horrible feeling in her stomach once she forced far too much liquid in there. It couldn’t be healthy, but her health seemingly hadn’t been all too important to her lately. Not with the way she had been going out and drinking.

Practice made perfect, he said. Amelia chuckled. “I’m gonna need a lot more of it first,” she assured him. She didn’t feel so good after chugging that drink, to the point that she was no longer really interested in the bottle of apple cider she was holding. She nodded in response to his question. “Yeah, I am. Psychology, although I’m not doing much in the way of studying these days,” she honestly answered him. She preferred going out, drinking, and recovering during the day. She’d passed a few of her subjects since they weren’t too difficult, but she was well on her way to failing statistics. “How about you?” she then asked. If she could’ve placed a bet, she would guess he was either a law or a business student.

As he seated himself, he wondered how old she was, or actually how young. Judging from her looks, she could be a minor still. Girls these days looked like they were in their twenties while still not having celebrated their sweet sixteen. As someone that was considered a grown man, you had to be careful with these things. But inside a club with dim lighting while being slightly intoxicated by alcohol it was hard sometimes to distinguish the ones that were far too young. But since she told him that she was a psychology student he doubted that she would be under eighteen. ”I’m enrolled into accountancy,” he answered when she asked whether he studied. By now, he should have finished his bachelor’s but he was still struggling to finish up his last year. ”But psychology sounds cool. What year are you in?” he asked, trying to sound genuinely interested.

Her company took a seat at the barstool, but Amelia remained standing so she could gently sway along to the rhythm of the music while they spoke. She wasn’t one to stand completely still whenever good music was playing loudly. While she stood there, she tried figuring out what kind of person she had in front of her. He looked pretty well-off, a little older than her as well. But not too old, gathering from his somewhat patchy beard. It looked cute, though.

Apparently, he was enrolled into the accountancy program. She raised a brow for a second, mostly because she was impressed. “Oh boy, I bet that’s hard,” she commented. Amelia had never been good at anything in the realm of mathematics, so she had a certain respect for people who could spend their entire life working with numbers. “I’m still in my first,” she responded to his question. “I’m really liking it so far, but statistics is really kicking my ass.” She was sure that if she tried a little harder, she would manage. But she wasn’t trying much at all. “And my friends keep dragging me out to bars, so that’s not helping much either…” She had shown up tipsy at exams, which certainly wasn’t beneficial towards her grades.

At the beginning of this studies, he had proven to be a good student and had passed several courses with high grades. But this all changed as soon as he joined Ithaca and started to live the life of a real student. Instead of studying, he started becoming somewhat of a party animal with a great fondness for strong drinks, girls, and parties. Nowadays, he barely spent time reading his books and working on assignments. Every so often he succeeded in passing one of his courses, which had got him to the final year of his bachelor.

The girl seemed to be impressed by the fact that he studied accountancy, commenting that it must be hard. Oliver never experienced it as a program that was particularly difficult. It was the fact that he actually had to do stuff to pass courses that made it challenging for him. He was sure that if he would spend more time at the library reading his books and making assignments, that he would have been graduated by now. ”It’s just about finances,” he reassured her. Accountancy had more to it, but it basically came down to one thing; money. ”I never really understood what you need statistics for,” he commented when she mentioned that she had difficulties with the subject. Oliver had managed to pass that course in his first year, by good luck. ”Well, you can resit an exam but not a night out,” he pointed out, trying to sound serious. It was an aphorism that he lived by. ”Can I order another drink for you?” he asked her, leaning a bit more towards her. Oliver didn’t like to be empty-handed in a club.

Her studies weren’t exactly her greatest priority just yet. Amelia, while relatively smart, had never really been a straight-A student. She was of the kind that preferred to put up an average performance at best if it meant she could just sail through without having to put in much effort. Working hard wasn’t in her nature, that much she knew by now. She supposed it didn’t help that she didn’t have much in the way of ambition, either.

Not that it mattered. Most drunk boys weren’t prowling the bars and clubs for a bright mind to fuck. Still, she was a little impressed by his major, especially since she knew she could never do anything of the sort herself. But it also sounded a bit boring, if she were frank. Amelia chuckled. “No, me neither,” she answered. Maybe if she attended her lectures more often, she would know. For a second, she looked both impressed and entertained at his sudden display of wisdom. “Ooh! Wonderful philosophy. I might steal that,” she cheerfully pointed out. Pensively, she bit her lip when he offered to buy her another drink. She was pretty full-up already, and also kind of tipsy. But she supposed one more drink – a free one! – wouldn’t hurt. “If you still have enough cash, sure. Another can’t hurt.” But that would be her last.

Throughout the years, Oliver had to take several resits as he often failed to pass the first test for his courses. Mostly because he simply did not feel like taking the time to prepare himself for his exams. Instead, he preferred to spend is his time on the more enjoyable things in life such as parties and other fun affairs. He could have been graduated with his bachelor's by now, nevertheless, he was still finishing up some second-year courses. Oliver never understood students who completed their studies without any delay. After all, your time as a student was supposed to be one of the best periods in your life so why not prolong it as much as possible.

Since he wanted to have another drink, he thought it would be nice to also ask the girl. She agreed on having another one if he would still have enough cash on himself. Oliver chuckled as he reached down his pockets to see whether he would have the financial resources to buy a drink for both. A few coins came out, mostly the spare change that he got back from previous purchases. It was probably enough to buy a beer, however, in this chi-chi place he doubted it would buy him two decent drinks. ”You know what,” he said, putting the coins back in his pockets. ”I still have liquor at home. What if I make you a cocktail myself?” Not only would he avoid ending up in the embarrassing situation of not being able to buy a girl a drink, but hopefully if she agree, he was bringing a good-looking bird to his place. Two birds with one stone, or one in this case…

Someday, maybe, she would get tired of partying and actually focus on her studies instead. But that day was not today, nor would it be tomorrow. There was so much excitement to be found in the city that she could not bring herself to care about boring things such as t-testing and regression. She was sure she would get her priorities straight someday, but she was in no hurry to complete her studies anyway. She was having far too much fun for that still.

Amelia was still holding her half-empty bottle of apple cider, but she loved the stuff so much that it would be gone in a matter of minutes. Another drink certainly wouldn’t hurt – or at least, it wouldn’t if he paid for it – but she wasn’t sure whether his cash-only policy would allow for two more drinks. A single corner of her mouth turned upwards when she saw him fish for coins in his pocket, but suddenly he changed his mind. He suggested that he make them some cocktails instead. Amelia took another swig of her cider, pondering it over. “Only if you’re good at it,” she said, holding up a single index finger. She didn’t want to walk all the way back to his place – wherever that was – only to drink a mediocre cocktail.

By now, he doubted he would find his friends back in this place. Some of them might have gone home already or moved to another and better place. He might as well start to make his way home too since he doubted, he would enjoy it in here much. But first, he had to convince this girl to join him, so instead of buying her a drink here, he suggested they could go to his place, and he would make some cocktails for them. ”Only one way to find out,” he said, throwing her a quick smile before he rose from the chair. His mixology skills were limited, however, there was no need to tell her that. That was something she was going to find out when she was already within the walls of his home. Oliver was getting ready to leave, eyeing the girl, whose name was still unknown to him, to see whether she would follow him or not.

Quickly, she looked around for a bit. She should probably tell her friends if she was intending to leave the club soon, or they would be worried for her well-being. She could probably expect to receive a couple of texts and phone calls, asking her where she was off to all of a sudden. But if she told them that she was going to go home with some guy, she would also never hear the end of it. As fond as she was of going out and partying, she wasn’t one to sleep around much.

Amelia told him she would only come along if his cocktails were any good, but he didn’t really answer that question. With a sigh, she eventually nodded and drank the rest of her cider. She placed the empty bottle onto the counter and looked at him again. “Fine, alright,” she eventually agreed. “Just let me get my jacket.” She had just left it somewhere around, so hopefully no one had grabbed it. It had her house keys and everything inside, so if it was gone, she would be royally fucked. Not to mention that it was horribly cold outside this time of year. Fortunately, it did not take too long before she found it. A cheap, leather jacket that she had gotten especially for going out, so she wouldn’t miss it too much if it would get stolen. After finding Oliver again, she headed outside, crossing her arms over her chest at the sudden ambush of the cold. “Ugh, I can’t wait until it’s summer again.” She couldn’t stand this horrible weather.

Before they would head outside, the girl wanted to grab her jacket. Oliver didn’t bring a jacket, despite having pretty cold weather these days. He used to bring one, but more often than not he managed to lose them. By now, he had wasted hundreds or even thousands of pounds on jackets that had gone missing during one of his nights out. Since he was spending not too much time outside, he figured that it might be better to leave his jacket at home.

Oliver waited for some time before the girl returned, jacket in her hand. For a minute, he had thought that she would not return, but apparently, his promise for tasty cocktails was enough to convince her to join him. They headed outside and were welcomed by the cold night air. Oliver walked over to one of the taxis outside, listening to how the girl complained about how she could not wait until it was summer again. ”Agreed,” he said, trying to stop a cab. Oliver was also not so fond of winter and everything that came along with it. ”Let’s grab that one,” he spoke, pointing towards one of the taxis. He didn’t want to stay here for too long as the cold air was chilly on his skin. Oliver opened one of the doors and waited for the girl to get inside.

Depending on where she was going out, there could be quite a walk involved from her destination to her home. Sometimes, if she could spare the money, she took a taxi, but those weren’t exactly cheap. Otherwise, she would have to make use of the subway and her own two feet, so it was only wise to bring a jacket with her. She eventually found it without too much trouble, and the two of them headed outside.

Once there, it was awfully cold, but she had to say that she liked the sudden quiet. The loud music in the clubs could get a bit much at times. He was quick to hail a taxi, which was often something that took her way too long. She was glad, though, because it meant she could get out of the terrible cold again. Amelia got into the vehicle when he opened the door for her, letting out a deep breath after. She then remembered that he hadn’t had enough money to buy her a drink, which meant he probably couldn’t cover cab fare either. She supposed she was going to have to pay, then. Great. “What’s your name anyway?” she decided to ask when he joined her on the back seat, looking at him. It was a little unusual for her to go home with someone without even knowing that particular fact.

Fortunately, it did not take long before a taxi halted to drive them to his place. Oliver made sure that the girl could step inside first as she had pointed out before that it was rather cold outside. Once she was seated, Oliver also took his place in the back seat. After he had given the driver, the instructions needed to get to his place, he shifted his gaze back to the girl. ”James,” he lied almost effortlessly. James was not the name others knew him by, but it was his second name. Oliver sometimes used it to remain more anonymous. It was not as if his girlfriend would be happy to hear that her Ollie had brought a girl to his place without her knowledge. ”What about you?” he asked.

The ride from the club to his house only took a few minutes, so it did not take long before the driver halted. ”We are there,” Oliver noted as he already opened the door. His house was a monumental, stately house located in the vicinity of the university campus. He shared it with a few others, but luckily he had his own private room.

Amelia was glad to find that it was nice and warm in the taxi cab, which made her hope that the journey to his place would be relatively long. For some reason, many boys she knew never felt the need to turn up the heating in their homes, which made for a less-than-pleasant experience on her part. She supposed it was her problem, though, always being cold and all that. Besides, a long ride would mean a pretty high cab fare, which she wouldn’t exactly be eager to pay. While money wasn’t as much a problem for her as it used to be, she didn’t like wasting it needlessly. He introduced himself as James, to which she hummed. “I’m Amelia,” she told him, not feeling the need to lie about her name at all. But maybe she should have.

It wasn’t too far, and once he was there, Amelia paid for the ride there and got out. Her eyes widened a little when she saw the building he lived in. For a moment, she was wondering whether this was some kind of joke, but it all seemed real. “You live here?” she asked him, almost as if in disbelief. “This place is beautiful.” And it was close to the campus, too. Which meant that he must have quite some money to spend.

The girl introduced herself as Amelia. A pretty name for a pretty girl, Oliver thought. However, he was also sure that he won’t be able to remember her name the next day. Whether this was a sign of bad memory or lack of consideration, he wasn't certain.

It only took a few minutes before they would arrive at his house. From the outside, it looked like a very fancy stately house, but looks could be deceiving. The inside was far from fancy and luxurious. The house had all the student necessities, including a homemade bar for house parties, a toilet with disco lighting, and a beamer with a screen to watch movies and football. They used to have a cleaning lady, but judging from the bathroom's current conditions, Oliver was quite certain that this lady had not come in weeks. ”Yep, I do,” he said, eyeing Amelia for a second. ”But I wouldn't be too excited. It’s a mess inside,” he warned her. Oliver reached for his keys and opened the front door. ”After you,” he said, gesturing her inside. He hoped that his roomies were either in bed or not at home since he didn’t fancy the idea of having to deal with them at the moment.

NOTHING HURTS ANYMORE
I FEEL KINDA FREE
Fortunately for her, she most likely wasn’t going to need his real name in the future anyway. She always ran into the same problem when going out: after a few drinks, she tended to be friendlier towards people than sober Amelia ever would be, which often led to her creating expectations that she could not meet. She would take guys home only for her to send them away a minute after coming in, or she would promise to go out with them only to turn them down the next day. It wasn’t exactly fair, but well…

Her eyes widened a little as she saw the impressive exterior of the building he allegedly lived in. He confirmed that he indeed lived here and, for a second, she was almost jealous. Not that she didn’t have a nice place, but… Well, it wasn’t this nice. She chuckled when he already disclaimed that it was a mess. “I’m sure it’s fine,” she spoke. Most of the times people called their houses messy, it wasn’t all that bad. She went inside and looked around a little bit. “Which one’s yours?” she inquired. She then found herself hoping that he didn’t have any roommates. He kind of seemed like a frat boy and she wasn’t excited for people coming in to bother them.
